Same Day Dentistry: Tooth Extraction Recovery Tips

Tooth Extraction Carson, CA

Tooth extraction is a common procedure in same day dentistry. It is often necessary when there is an infection or damage so severe that the tooth cannot be saved, or in case of tooth impaction. Read on to discover tips to ensure full recovery following an extraction procedure.

Recovery tips after a same-day tooth extraction

Regardless of the reason for tooth removal, the severity of the issue that led to the extraction will affect the rate of recovery. If there was a severe infection, it has to heal with the empty tooth socket before things become normal again. If the patient has sensitive gums, it may take a while to recover.

Although aftercare may be different depending on the type of extraction and position of the tooth, patients can expect healing to occur after about seven to 10 days. Patients need to take extra care to ensure that the blood clot that forms in the tooth socket remains intact. If it dislodges, a condition known as dry socket might occur, which can be painful and cause complications.

The following are a few tips for speeding up recovery time:

  • Use pain relievers as recommended by the dental professional
  • Let the gauze pad remain on the extraction site for three to four hours after the extraction
  • Apply a cold compress over the affected area for about 10–15 minutes at a time to help with swelling
  • Get adequate rest for at least 24 hours and avoid strenuous activities for some days afterward
  • To prevent the blood clot from dislodging, avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for at least 24 hours
  • To clean the mouth, use a salt solution to rinse and allow the water to flow out freely to avoid spitting
  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
  • Use pillows to prop the head up when sleeping
  • After 24 hours, normal brushing and flossing can resume but avoid the extraction site

Throughout the healing process, it is better to stick to soft foods such as pudding, yogurt, soup, and apple sauce. Smoothies can be included in the diet, but they must be eaten with a spoon. As the mouth heals, patients can start to include solid foods in their diet, but soft foods should be consumed at least a week after extraction.

Pain management after extraction

It is normal to experience discomfort, pain, or soreness after same day dentistry tooth extraction. Some facial swelling might also occur. The pain relievers prescribed by the dentist will help to alleviate the symptoms. Over-the-counter medications may also be recommended. If pain persists two or three days after the procedure, patients need to contact the dentist. The same applies if the pain worsens days later, as it could be a sign of an infection.

The bottom line

When the mouth heals fully, you will be able to resume your usual routine. New bone and gum tissues will form over the extraction point. To prevent issues that may arise due to the missing tooth, you can talk to the dentist about same day dentistry tooth replacement options after an extraction.
